Jobs Description

Arista Networks is seeking top-tier Senior/Lead software engineers to join our Packet Forwarding Engines (PFE) and System software development team. As a key member of the PFE software and System software team, you will be part of a dynamic, high-caliber team focused on building packet forwarding engine and system software to manage the most intricate networking ASICs used in constructing the largest data center networks in the industry. Your software will be a critical component of Arista's Extensible Operating System (EOS), a unique, Linux-based network operating system that powers all of Arista's data center networking products. The Packet Forwarding Engines and System software team is responsible for all aspects of developing and delivering our ASIC-based forwarding engine software. You will collaborate with fellow engineers to comprehend functional and technical requirements for upcoming projects. You will be responsible for writing functional specifications, design specifications, test plans, and the code to bring these requirements to fruition. Additionally, you will engage with customers to diagnose and resolve issues within their networks. Internally, you will develop automated tests for your software, oversee the execution of those tests, and address any issues detected. At Arista, you will take ownership of your projects from inception to deployment, ensuring the quality of all deliverables. This role requires strong software engineering fundamentals and a solid understanding of ASIC-based packet forwarding engines, hardware components (such as temperature sensors, fan controllers, etc.), board system management software, the implementation of software managing them, and the networks in which they are utilized. Your responsibilities will encompass bringing up new hardware, developing all features requiring hardware forwarding support (including low-level hardware drivers), testing the software and hardware, and supporting our customers using the products you build. Responsibilities: • Draft functional specifications and design specifications for small-sized packet forwarding engine features and system software to manage hardware components. • Independently implement solutions to small-sized problems in our packet forwarding engine software and system software using the C, C++, and Python programming languages. • Understand, utilize, test, and debug packet forwarding engine and hardware components vendor-provided software libraries in your solutions. • Develop test plan specifications for small-sized packet forwarding engine features and system software, and implement automated test programs to execute the cases described in the test plan. • Debug problems found by our automated test programs and rectify them. • Collaborate with a team to implement, test, and debug solutions to larger packet forwarding engine software problems and system software issues. • Work with Customer Support Engineers to analyze problems in customer networks and provide fixes for those problems when needed through new software releases or software patches. • Collaborate with the hardware team and hardware component vendors to bring up initial versions of new systems using packet forwarding engines and system software. • Work with the diagnostic software team to design and develop software for the validation of new packet forwarding engine ASICs and hardware components. • Collaborate with the System Test Engineers to analyze problems found in their tests and provide fixes for those problems. • Mentor new and junior engineers to familiarize them with Arista's software development environment. • Review and contribute to the specifications and implementations written by other team members. • Assist in creating a schedule for the implementation and debugging tasks, updating the schedule weekly, and reporting it to the project lead. Qualifications: BS in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering + 8 years of experience, or MS in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering + 6 years of experience, or Ph.D. in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering + 3 years of experience, or equivalent work experience. Experience or knowledge in the following: C or C++, knowledge of UNIX or Linux, understanding of IP networking or distributed systems, applied understanding of software engineering principles, strong problem-solving and software troubleshooting skills, ability to design a solution to a small-sized problem, and implement that solution without external assistance. Able to work on a small team to solve a medium-sized problem with limited oversight. Additional Information: • The new hire base pay for this role has a pay range of $130,000 to $195,000 across Canada. Arista offers different pay ranges based on work location to ensure consistent and competitive pay appropriate to the market. The actual base pay offered will be based on a wide range of factors, including skills, qualifications, relevant experience, and work location. • The provided pay range reflects base pay only, and certain roles may also be eligible for discretionary Arista bonuses and equity. Employees in Sales roles are eligible to participate in Arista’s Sales Incentive Plan, which pays commissions calculated as a percentage of eligible sales. Employees are also entitled to benefits including medical, dental, vision, wellbeing, income protection, and a Group Retirement Savings Plan. The recruiting team can share more details during the hiring process specific to the role and location. All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.
